October 16, 2003


Army Lt. Col. Kim S. Orlando,


43, of Tennessee; commanding officer of the 716th Military Police Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), based in Fort Campbell, Ky.; killed while attempting to negotiate with armed men who were congregating on a road near a mosque after curfew on Oct. 16 in Karbala, Iraq. Also killed in the attack were Staff Sgt. Joseph P. Bellavia and Cpl. Sean R. Grilley. Seven other U.S. soldiers were wounded.

Army Chief Warrant Officer 3 William I. Brennan,


36, of Bethlehem, Conn.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation, 25th Infantry Division (Light), Wheeler Army Air Field, Hawaii; killed Oct. 16 when his OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter apparently collided with another OH-58D helicopter and crashed in Baghdad. Also killed was Capt. Christopher B. Johnson.

29, of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation, 25th Infantry Division (Light), Wheeler Army Air Field, Hawaii; killed Oct. 16 when his OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter apparently collided with another OH-58D helicopter and crashed in Baghdad. Also killed was Chief Warrant Officer William I. Brennan.

22, of Whittier, Calif.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, Vicenza, Italy; died Oct. 16 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of non-combat related injuries sustained in an accident at Organ-E, Afghanistan Oct. 15.

20, of Williamsburg, Kan.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.; died Oct.16 in Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, of a non-combat-related illness after being transported from Tikrit, Iraq.
